“Tomyris was a Kazakh queen”
Misleading. Tomyris was a historical or semi-historical figure described by Herodotus as queen of the Massagetae, a nomadic people who inhabited the Eurasian steppe — territory that overlaps with modern Kazakhstan. She is celebrated in Kazakhstani national memory and culture. However, describing her as 'Kazakh' applies a modern national identity to a 6th-century BCE context where that category did not exist.
