Myth examined
“The Semipalatinsk nuclear test site is now completely safe”
Misleading. Kazakhstan closed the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site in 1991 and remediation work has been carried out on specific zones. However, the site is not uniformly safe: contaminated areas remain, some zones are still monitored or restricted, and the health effects on surrounding populations continue to be studied by international researchers.
