Glossary

Terms that are often translated, simplified or misunderstood in conversations about Kazakhstan.

Qazaq / Kazakh

Qazaq is the self-name of the Kazakh people and language. Kazakh is the common English form for the language and nationality; Kazakhstani usually refers to a citizen or resident of Kazakhstan, regardless of ethnicity.

Kazakhstani

A civic term for people connected to the state of Kazakhstan. It is not a synonym for ethnic Kazakh: Kazakhstan has many ethnic communities and citizens.

Kumys / Qymyz

Fermented mare's milk with a place in Kazakh horse-breeding and hospitality traditions. It is cultural heritage, not a drink consumed identically by every person.

Yurt

A portable dwelling associated with Central Asian nomadic traditions and recognised living heritage. Modern Kazakh life is mostly urban and settled, while yurts remain used for cultural, festive and practical purposes.

Zhuz

A historical social and genealogical grouping among Kazakh communities. It should not be treated as a simple modern political party, race or rigid caste system.

Oblast

A major administrative region of Kazakhstan, broadly comparable to a province. Boundaries and names can change, so current administrative data should be dated.

Nauryz

A spring celebration observed across Central Asia and beyond. In Kazakhstan it combines seasonal, cultural and civic meanings and is not evidence of one single religious identity.

Akim / Akimat

An akim is a regional or city executive official; an akimat is the corresponding local executive body.

Baikonur

The name used for both the nearby city and the large space complex in Kazakhstan. Russia operates the complex under a lease; operation does not change its geographic location.

Middle Corridor

The Trans-Caspian International Transport Route linking rail, road and Caspian shipping between China, Central Asia, the Caucasus and Europe.

Semipalatinsk

The former Soviet nuclear test site and surrounding historical region. Its legacy is central to Kazakhstan's disarmament and nuclear-policy debates.

Aral Sea

A transboundary inland lake severely reduced by human water-management decisions. The Northern Aral in Kazakhstan has seen partial restoration, while the wider crisis continues.
